Brahmaputra river which flows into India originates from Tibet. It is known Yarling Tsangpo in Tibet and its flow into Bangladesh, Nepal and India. The river flowing down from Tibet to these three countries has crucial significance to millions of lives. However, China blocks Brahmaputra to implement their most expensive hydroelectric projects.
“Tibet on Friday blocked a tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo River as part of its most expensive hydro project,” the official Xinhua news agency reported. The Lalho project, which is building a dam on Xiabuqu River, a tributary of Brahmaputra has been started in June 2014.
This ambitious hydroelectric project is being implemented at huge cost of $740 million and it is expected to be completed in 2019.
The Brahmaputra is one of India’s major rivers that originates from Tibet, flowing into Arunachal Pradesh and Assam before going into Bangladesh. India has serious concerns over the water sharing policies between the two nations as many river lines in India originates in China occupied Tibet.
China however said on Sunday that damming on Brahmaputra will have no impact in India where millions of lives are reliant on that river line. In fact they went on to claim their absolute right of blocking the tributary as the entire length of the tributary lies within China occupied territory.
Ironically, China also proposed that they will be exploited the water resources responsibly. This is a very unpleasing proposal from China as they have been accused by various international environment activists and organisations of exploiting the natural mines and forests resources of Tibet irresponsibly.
