China Accuse Marriott of Insincerity in Apology for Listing Tibet As a Country

After the Marriott International, a leading hotel issued an apology for listing Tibet as country in a survey form, Chinese now accuse the hotel chain of insincerity in its apology. Marriott International is now being accused for disregarding ‘One China Policy’ after the Marriott Rewards twitter account liked a tweet of Tibet supporters group on Wednesday.

Marriott International in a questionnaire survey sent via email to its premium members to collect their feedback of its services had an option to choose their country and the list included the Chinese mainland, China’s Tibet, Macao, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Chinese netizens began to protest against the questionnaire format immediately on Tuesday.

“We are deeply sorry for the questionnaires. We realize that this mistake would deeply disappoint our Chinese customers. For now, we have suspended the questionnaires and will fix the options at once. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the incident.” Marriott Rewards issued the apology on Chinese social media Sina Weibo after many threatened to boycott it.

However, China is still not pleased and now it has announced that the Market Supervision Bureau in Huangpu has filed a case to investigate the incident, and the hotel chain is suspected of violating China’s Cybersecurity Law and Advertisement Law. Chinese netizens now accuse the hotel of deliberately breaking the ‘One China Policy’ after it has liked a tweet which congratulated Marriott for listing Tibet as a country.

“The regulator on cyberspace affairs and market supervision bureau in Huangpu have noticed the incident of Marriott International listing China’s Tibet Autonomous Region as a country and had a meeting with its heads on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Market Supervision Bureau in Huangpu has filed a case to investigate the incident, and the hotel chain is suspected of violating China’s Cybersecurity Law and Advertisement Law,” The government of Huangpu district in Shanghai issued this notice on social media after it asked the hotel chain to give a timely response to public concerns, make corrections on different channels and try its best to erase the bad influence.
