Taiwan Gets Its First Women President In Its Historic Election

Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen has been elected Taiwan’s first ever female president. The DDP she represented demands Taiwan’s independence from China. In this turn-over result of elections, Ms. Tsai not only becomes the first ever women president for the country, it also broke the trait of almost 70 years long monopoly rule of KMT party over Taiwan.

In her victory statement, Ms. Tsai vowed to preserve the status quo in relations with China and asserted that Beijing should respect Taiwan’s democracy.

She has told that Taiwan’s relations with China would be based on the will of Taiwan citizens. She emphasised the victory to be the dawn of a ‘New Era’ for Taiwan and she also expressed her willingness to co-operate with all other major parties of the nation on issues of major significance.

“I also want to emphasise that both sides of the Taiwanese Strait have a responsibility to find mutually acceptable means of interaction that are based on dignity and reciprocity. We must ensure that no provocations or accidents take place,” Ms Tsai said, warning that “any forms of suppression will harm the stability of cross-strait relations”.

She also ensured to maintain peace and stability in the region.

From a Tibetan point of view, it is a pinching slap on Mr. Xi’s cheek! The people of Taiwan has shown their desire of independence from China just from giving Ms. Tsai victory by a huge margin. We wish the new president good luck for the new beginning in fulfilling the desires of the citizens of the free people.
