17 Students Test COVID-19 Positive at Tibetan School in India

17 students have tested COVID-19 positive at a Tibetan school in India. After almost a break from regular in person teaching for students in most of the schools in India, there was some hope for reopening. However, from early April this year, India has been gripped by a worse second surge of Coronavirus. This has a severe impact at the plans of reopening of schools.

At the Tibetan Homes School in Mussoorie, a total of 17 students have been reported to have tested Coronavirus positive. In addition to that, 4 staff members of the organization tested positive to the virus. Tibetan Homes School is a residential school with a huge number of students. However, according to the report by Voice of America, the situation is very much under control and the institute is very prepared for the worst.

The general secretary of the institute has explained in the report that most of the positive cases have been reported from students in quarantine. After students are arriving back to school, a mandatory quarantine is required before they can mingle with the rest of the students. The school has sought necessary help from the local Indian municipal administration and he assured that there are no serious cases at all.

India is reporting a serious second wave of Coronavirus surge despite the rollout of the vaccine on a massive scale. India recorded 1,68,912 new Covid-19 infections, the highest ever since the pandemic began. It now has 1,35,27,717 total cases, leaving behind Brazil which according to Johns Hopkins University has reported 1,34,82,023 infections. Only the United States is ahead with 3,11,98,055. The active cases in the country surpassed the 12-lakh mark, the highest-ever. These cases were above one million in September last year but started declining after that.
