He also said that he will press on China to provide meaningful autonomy for Tibetans and cease restrictions on Tibetan religious, linguistic, and cultural practices. “China’s refusal to grant regular consular access to Americans in the Tibetan Autonomous Region represents a failure by the Chinese government to live up to their international obligations. If confirmed, I will also continue to press the Chinese government to allow for the option to open a U.S. Consulate in Lhasa.” the new US ambassador to China replied to the question if he will commit to pressing China in opening a US consulate in Lhasa.

Mr. Terry Branstad though have testified about the human rights issues in Tibet, he has a long-standing and personal friendship with Chinese President Xi Jinping that dates back to 1985. It remains to be seen if he has actually been appointed to stand up to real American values or to warm up the US China relationship especially when Donald Trump and Xi Jingping has not been getting along very well.
