1st May: Aftab Pureval, the son of Indian and Tibetan immigrants, is running for mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, and if elected, will be the state’s first mayor of South Asian descent. Aftab is the Hamilton County Clerk at the moment, and he has a history of trying to make courts more available to underserved populations.

Six candidates are running for mayor of Cincinnati in the May 4 primary, with the top two vote-getters moving on to the general election.

That group of five Democrats and one independent includes Ohio Sen. Cecil Thomas, of Avondale; Cincinnati Councilman David Mann, of Clifton; Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Aftab Pureval, of Clifton; retired Cincinnati firefighter Raffel Prophett, of Avondale; Businessman Gavi Begtrup, of Mount Lookout; and Najoli.

“Despite cutting waste and adding new facilities, Aftab was able to save taxpayers almost $1 million. Aftab hopes to take a bipartisan approach to run for mayor and demonstrate how the government should function for all people,” said Neil Makhija, Executive Director of IMPACT, the nation’s leading Indian American civic and political group, which is supporting the mayoral candidate.

‘Make sure wealth is shared in every corner of our region,’ says Aftab Pureval.

Pureval said that he wants to assist Cincinnati in recovering from the economic downturn caused by the pandemic while also ensuring that the recovery is equal for everyone.

This strategy entails making it more equal for those who have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and other economic downturns. Pureval would concentrate on “wealth generation, equity, and ownership” as mayor, he said.

Pureval said that, despite recent indictments at City Hall, people should remain wary of politicians becoming involved in development deals behind closed doors.

Aftab is currently leading in opinion polls with the primary less than a week away.
