India Does Not Recognise Ogyen Trinley Dorje as the 17th Karmapa: Report

According to breaking developments in the media reports, the Indian government reportedly not recognising well known Ogyen Trinley Dorje who is presently out of India on an extended stay in the United States since May last year as the 17th Karmapa.

While Ogyen Trinley Dorje is popularly recognised as the 17th Karmapa, the head of the Kagyue sect of Tibetan Buddhism since he is the candidate officially recognised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration in exile, another claimant Thaye Dorje recognised by late Shamar Rinpoche also contests as the 17th Karmapa.

However, according to the breaking report in the India Today TV, sources from government of India revealed that it does not recognise Ogyen Trinley Dorje as the sole 17th Karmapa. In addition to that, the government is reportedly upset at the most influential Tibetan lama after the Dalai Lama in exile securing a foreign passport without prior notice to the government of India!

“In a huge development on the question of the 17th Karmapa Lama, sources have told India Today TV that New Delhi does not recognise Ogyen Trinley Dorje as the ‘sole’ Karmapa.” told the report in the India Today on Thursday.

While the Karmapa in US has expressed his keen desire to return to India and carry out his religious activities and awaiting a visa, the government while suggesting the Karmapa is welcome to return anytime, his Registration Certificate and Identity Certificate issued to him as a Tibetan refugee have been declared invalid.
