Tibetan Women Helpline: ending sexual and gender-based violence in the Tibetan community

 

Dharamshala, 30th September: The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) is dedicated to developing a Tibetan community free of sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as putting justice at the forefront of its relief and development efforts. As a result, an sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) Helpline was established in partnership with the Central Tibetan Women’s Association, in accordance with CTA rules (TWA). “Tibetan Women Helpline (TWH)” is the name of the helpline, which was established in March 2020.

Mission:

Tibetan Women Helpline is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the Tibetan community. TWH’s mission is to ensure the protection of all Tibetan women and girls in India’s Tibetan community.

Vision:

A Tibetan community that is free of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

Target Group:

  • In Tibetan society, women who are victims of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
  • Victim/survivor of domestic violence.
  • Sexual abuse victims and survivors include women and children.
  • Women who have been subjected to abuse as a result of their economic reliance.
  • Women and children who have been subjected to psychological abuse.
  • Women and children who have been victims of cybercrime.
  • Those who have been harmed by sexual and gender-based violence.

Service Provided:

Through a referral, the TWH provides immediate, emergency, and non-emergency responses and information to women in distress, children in distress, and persons affected by violence, particularly SGBV and other forms of abuse, both in public and private spaces, by connecting them with appropriate authorities such as police, hospitals, and legal, among others. It also contains the following information:

  • Counseling
  • Safe Space
  • Referral Services (Legal/Medical)
  • Provision of Sustenance Fund

Counseling:

The Tibetan Women Helpline offers psychosocial support to survivors and victims of sexual and gender-based violence. Someone who has been a victim of SGBV is often unwilling to seek treatment. Counseling can aid in emotional recovery and recovery from such events. TWH offers both in-person and online counseling, depending on the circumstances and needs of each client.

Safe Space/Shelter:

TWH provides a safe haven/shelter for women who are afraid to leave their homes and don’t know where else to go. The safe space was founded with the goal of providing a safe atmosphere for women and girls to express themselves without fear of being hurt. TWH does not reveal the location of the safe space or the location of our complainants for reasons of protection and safety. Their facility will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will initially consist of one furnished bedroom with basic facilities. While the safe place is only meant to be used for a short period of time, TWH will continue to provide the aggrieved women with additional forms of support that will benefit them in the long run.

Fund for Sustenance:

This aid is available to Tibetan women and girls of all ages who are victims of sexual and gender-based violence in India and who lack adequate means of subsistence and are financially vulnerable. Sustenance funds are provided for a three-month term and may be extended after a review of each case.

Other Services:

It is critical to raise awareness about sexual and gender-based violence in order to combat it. SGBV is a problem that affects everyone in the community. The only way to prevent such acts of violence is to raise awareness about the problem. As a result, the Tibetan Women Helpline not only addresses but also raises awareness about the following issues:

  • Workshop on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence
  • Workshop on Gender Sensitization
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health of Women
  • Workshops on legal issues (Domestic Violence Act, Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act, Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act, Violence Against Women and Cyber Crimes)
