Tibetan Buddhist Leader Missing for Ten Months as China Ignores Seven Appeals Copy headline

More than ten months after Chinese authorities detained prominent Tibetan Buddhist leader and educator Choktrul Dorje Ten Rinpoche in occupied Tibet, his whereabouts and condition remain unknown, raising serious concerns about his safety amid continued restrictions on Tibetan religious and educational institutions.

According to a September 21 report by the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), family members and students of the respected Buddhist leader have submitted seven formal appeals to Chinese authorities seeking information about his detention and physical well-being. None of the appeals had received a response at the time of the report.

Choktrul Dorje Ten Rinpoche was reportedly detained on or around December 4, 2025, while travelling from his monastery to his home in Chikdril County, Golog, in the traditional Tibetan region of Amdo. Chinese authorities have not publicly disclosed his place of detention, the legal grounds for holding him, or whether he has access to legal representation.

A relative living in exile told ICT that the prolonged absence of any verifiable information has left his family and students deeply concerned about his safety, including whether he remains alive.

The Rinpoche is the head of Minthang Osel Thegchok Chokhorling Monastery and the founder of the Dorje Ten Ethnic Vocational School, one of the few remaining privately operated institutions providing Tibetan-medium education in the region.

As previously reported by Tibetan Journal, Chinese authorities closed the school in late 2025, forcing hundreds of students to leave an institution that combined formal education with Tibetan language, medicine, traditional arts, and vocational training.

The latest ICT findings indicate that the crackdown has extended beyond the school. Several other institutions associated with the Rinpoche, including the Nyenpo Yutse Primary School and cultural organizations dedicated to preserving the Tibetan epic of King Gesar, have reportedly been shut down.

Authorities have also allegedly prohibited members of these institutions from discussing organizational affairs, closed related WeChat groups, and imposed heightened surveillance on the local community.

These measures have intensified concerns that the Rinpoche’s detention forms part of China’s wider campaign to restrict independent Tibetan religious and cultural institutions.

Choktrul Dorje Ten Rinpoche, born in 1967, is a respected scholar of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He studied at Larung Gar Buddhist Academy and devoted decades to advancing religious education, Tibetan-language learning, and cultural preservation. His educational contributions had previously received recognition from Chinese authorities.

His disappearance has attracted international attention.

In April 2026, Amnesty International launched an urgent appeal demanding that Chinese authorities disclose his whereabouts and release him unless there is credible evidence of a recognizable criminal offence. The organization warned that prolonged detention without outside communication exposes detainees to heightened risks of torture and other ill-treatment.

The European Parliament also called for his immediate release in a resolution adopted on April 30, 2026.

Despite these international appeals, no verified information about his detention or condition had emerged as of ICT’s September report.

The case reflects broader concerns about the treatment of Tibetan religious leaders and educators under Chinese rule. Across Tibet, authorities have increasingly restricted independent Tibetan-language education, imposed political controls over monasteries, and limited community institutions that preserve Tibetan religious and cultural traditions.

The detention of a prominent religious educator, together with the reported closure of institutions he established, has consequences extending beyond one individual. It threatens educational opportunities and the community-led transmission of Tibetan language, religious knowledge, and cultural heritage.

For his family and students, however, the most immediate concern remains unanswered: where is Choktrul Dorje Ten Rinpoche, and what has happened to him?

More than ten months after his reported detention, Chinese authorities have yet to provide an accountable public explanation.
