Dharamshala, 24th November: With Han Chinese saturating the labor market and public-sector jobs mostly out of reach, Tibetan university graduates are finding it difficult to find work in Tibet’s capital, Lhasa. Authorities’ promises to develop more opportunities for Tibetan graduates have gone unfulfilled in recent years.
Previously, Tibetans graduating from universities had a few career options as instructors or in modest government jobs. However, in recent years, many Chinese have moved into Tibet in the name of development, and Tibetan graduates have consequently lost all job opportunities. Even when Tibetans are hired for government jobs, they are frequently placed in departments unrelated to their education or major.
Because the majority of Tibetan job candidates have been unable to find work in private companies, including high-tech firms and manufacturing, the civil sector has become a primary priority for job searchers.
However, as China attempts to foster the dominance of Chinese culture and language in Tibetan areas, requirements for fluency in Mandarin Chinese in testing and selection for employment have disadvantaged Tibetan students.
6 Tibetan rights groups organize protests in Paris against Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics:
Students for Free Tibet (SFT), Tibetan Youth Congress (France), U Tsang Association (France), Chushi Gangdruk; Domey Association (France); and Tibetan Community Association jointly planned a protest demonstration in Paris on November 20 to condemn the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
Dhondup Wangchen, a Tibetan filmmaker and former political prisoner, was the main speaker at the rally. He is on a 22-country tour urging politicians, media, and individuals to boycott the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games.
He spoke about his own experience as a political prisoner in China, as well as the deteriorating human rights situation in Tibet, throughout his lecture. Wangchen will record video messages from people all over the world during his tour and submit them to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the end.
Wangchen arrived in Paris on Wednesday, where he was met at the Gare du Nord railway station by the President of the Tibetan Community, SFT, and other Tibetan Associations, according to the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA).
Wangchen’s Paris tour will be organized by SFT France between November 18 and 23, 2021. According to CTA, he will meet journalists, politicians, and individuals to recount his personal experience of Chinese prisoners’ suffering and Tibetan people’s suffering inside Tibet in the aftermath of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, in the hopes that his narrative and emotional experience will bring Tibet to the forefronts at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games.
