EU Concerned About China’s Interference In Dalai Lama’s Reincarnation

Dalai Lama’s reincarnation though have not made any confirmation from the current Dalai Lama himself yet, China has been extremely proactive in authenticating themselves in recognising the next Dalai Lama. The European Union therefore has been very concerned about the visible political influences brewing up in the selection of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation.

“The four main political groups in the European Parliament have co-hosted a conference on the reincarnation of the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet now living in exile. Representatives of EPP, S&D, Alde and The Greens-EFA expressed concerns about signs of political interference in the selection of a successor to Dalai Lama.” said the report published by the Brussels Times.

According to the report the conference titled, ‘Reincarnation of the Dalai Lama: Why it matter to China’, took place on 7 February following a resolution made in December 2016 when the Parliament condemned the demolition of a Buddhist centre in Tibet by the authorities, leading to the eviction of monks and nuns.

“The conference was opened by MEP Thomas Mann. MEP Preda moderated the panel. MEP Molly Scott-Cato and MEP Laszlo Tokes made opening remarks strongly expressing their views in support of Tibet and the incredulous way China is misrepresenting world-wide the concept and the tradition of reincarnation. MEP Csaba Sogor also recalled his country’s experience under the Communist regime of Ceausescu. He said that spirituality will not be cowed down by military and forcible Communist theology.” said the official report by the Central Tibetan Administration.

“Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Buddhist leadership in exile oppose reincarnation through illegitimate and bureaucratic methods, foreign to Tibetan tradition and custom.  China is of the opinion that the reincarnation procedure is a matter of its sovereignty. The issue of reincarnation is part of a wider problem that concerns Tibetan identity and the future of a unique religious tradition, part of our common world heritage.” added the Brussels Times report.
