Exile Tibetan Parliament Begins Session Amid COVID-19 Safety Measures

The Tibetan Parliament in Exile began its session with special measures of arrangement to ensure COVID-19 safety, from Monday in Dharamshala, India. Central Tibetan Administration or commonly identified as the Tibetan government in exile is a democratic institution that has an independent office called the Tibetan Parliament in Exile that performs the duties of a full fledged parliament.

Since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic in March last year across the world, the Tibetan Parliament in Exile shortened its Budget sessions scheduled for March 2020 and wrapped up in on day. Following the widespread of the Coronavirus, the scheduled sessions of the parliament in September 2020 could not take place. This is the first time the parliament is holding its regular sessions since the pandemic struck.

Members of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile hail from different parts of the world. Currently there are two representatives from South and North American region, two from European region, One from Australia, Japan and other Asian regions excluding India, Nepal and Bhutan. There are 40 representatives from India, Nepal and Bhutan.

“The global Covid-19 pandemic has caused immense difficulties to everyone and disrupted regular activities,” The Speaker said at the inaugural speech on Monday, “However, we are relieved to inform that none of the members joining the session has tested positive for Covid as this was one of our primary concerns.”

This is the last session for the incumbent members of the parliament as the elections from the 17th Members Tibetan Parliament in Exile are underway. Following the conclusion of the preliminary rounds of exile Tibetan elections of President of Central Tibetan Administration and 17th Members of Tibetan Parliament in Exile, the final round of its elections will take place on April 11, later this year.
