Tibetan Woman Lit on Fire in Toronto Dies, Man Charged 1st Degree Murder

A Tibetan woman who in a very unfortunate incident was lit on fire and succumbed to the injuries recently. The man who is also identified to be a Tibetan is now facing upgraded charges of first-degree murder. This incident has shocked the local community and the global Tibetan community at large despite no clarity in the story initially.

The suspect is a 33-year-old man, Tenzin Norbu on June 17 this year doused a woman with a flammable liquid substance on a TTC bus and lit her on fire. Police say a man was arrested at the scene and the woman was rushed to a hospital, according to the Toronto City News on Monday. He has initially been charged with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, common nuisance endangering the lives, safety, or health of the public, and mischief.

The victim is now identified as Nyima Dolma, a 28-year-old caregiver based in Toronto. She struggled for life at the hospital for two weeks before passing away on Tuesday last week. The police have found that the accused and the victim didn’t know each other and it is being treated as a case of hate crime.

Following the tragic incident, an online fund raising campaign was started on GoFund Me which raised more than $40K for medical expenses. Her sister has described that Dolma was on her way to work as a professional caregiver when she was attacked by a stranger who threw lighter fluid on her and set her on fire. Dolma is believed to have lived a life in the service of others.
