In an obvious reaction from China, the communist regime has taken revenge for the Prague mayor’s support to Tibet. As the mayor hosted the representative of the exile Tibetan administration earlier this month, China has cancelled many events of Prague-based cultural organisations in China.
Although the Czech government is making efforts to strengthen its ties to the Chinese counter-part, the mayor of Prague Zdeněk Hřib, a member of the Pirate Party has been openly shrugging shoulders with China. The mayor has been openly supporting the Tibetan cause.
The mayor of Prague welcomed in the beginning of March the Sikyong or Prime Minister of the Tibetan government in exile, Dr. Lobsang Sangay. This made the Chinese furious as they took it as an act of ‘disobedience’ from the Czech side. Although the Czech Republic didn’t sign yet a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China, its political leadership is flirting with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the country that is considered to belong to the sphere of influence of China, according European Interest.
China has cancelled many concerts and cultural events of Prague-based cultural organisations in China. Because Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib’s visit in Taiwan and his meeting with Tibetan Prime Minister irritated the Chinese side, the act is considered as one of revenge efforts by China.
