During Beijing Olympics, China increases controls in Tibetan areas.

Dharamshala, 11th February: During the Beijing Winter Olympics, authorities have tightened security measures in Tibetan areas of western China, with police closely monitoring locals to prevent communication with Tibetans in exile, according to RFA who claimed sources in the region.

According to RFA, One guy living in the area told them(RFA) this week that restrictions are especially stiff in the Kanlho (in Chinese, Gannan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu province and the Ngaba (Aba) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan.

Police in Gansu’s Thewo (Diebu) county are now questioning local Tibetans and inspecting mobile phones and online chat groups for proof of ties outside the country.

Tibetans in Ngaba and Kanlho who send money to Tibetans in exile for use in prayer ceremonies are constantly intimidated by Chinese authorities, who confiscate their phones and freeze their bank accounts, according to previous investigations by RFA.

Because of China’s treatment of Tibetans and other minority groups, the 2022 Winter Olympics, which began on February 4, have sparked a wave of protests and boycotts around the world.
